Main Characters:
Joe Lundy- He was the owner of the store where the mother had purchased all of the supplies she needed to help her relieve her dog from the evilness that would become of their city and the surrounding cities due to the war.
The Mother- She is one of the main characters who has the biggest struggle through out the book because she has to do all the preparations for their evacuation and she has to explain to her children in a way that they would understand, but not be scared, that they are leaving their home for a little while and that they need to pack only one suitcase and be ready to leave by morning. it seems to be hard for her to have to go through this all while her husband is locked up in jail.
The Daughter- she was eleven years old and had long black hair that was always done up in braids and a bow. She had a very inquisitive personality that lead her to being very friendly. Her questions led her to becoming friends with a man (Ted Ishimoto) on the train while they were waiting in line for the bathroom.
The Son- For only being eight years old, he seemed to have a higher intelligence than people we interact with daily. Whenever his sister did something that he knew would make his mother feel bad, he always tried to correct it. While being very smart, he still was only eight years old which meant that he wanted to just be a boy and play war with his friends at the evacuation camp. He was both the giver and reciever of letters from his father. Through him, the family could communicate with the father even though he was far away.
The Father- He had to fake the fact that he was imprisoned to his children because he didnt want the to lose respect they had for him or to think down upon the future. He didnt want them to think that it could be their fate as well because of the war that was going on. he has to wait four years in prison before he can finally be reunited with his family.
Elizabeth Morgana Roosevelt- She and her family were good friends to the japanese family that was evacuated. During the war, she was their only neighbor and friend that would write them letters back and forth explaining what was happening during the war. Because although when the japanese family was living by them, they were close to all their neighbors and when they came back it was a whole different story. people had all forgotten about them and avoided having contact with them, even Elizabeth.
